RESIDENTS and visitors to Wharfedale were given a rare treat on Sunday when a spectacular display of bizarre mammatus clouds was visible in the eastern sky.

This amazing photograph was taken by Brin Best, of Wharfedale Naturalist's Society on Easter Sunday.

Brin said: "These mysterious clouds, which are often associated with thunderstorms, are named for their resemblance to mammary glands - especially cows’ udders.

"They create some of the most amazing sky patterns of any cloud type, often resulting in scenes that are reminiscent of natural disaster movies. Sunday’s display - part of a storm supercell that was visible across much of Yorkshire at some point during the day - was one of the most extraordinary mammatus cloud events ever seen in our region."
