A lake is being built on stage at Yeadon Town Hall as thespians aim to make a splash with their latest production.

The set designers of Yeadon Amateur Operatic and Dramatic Society are busy building the mini lake, which will form an integral part of the action in their forthcoming production of Sweet Charity.

A spokesman for the group said: “The lake forms a key element of the plot development, and whilst we can’t quite recreate Yeadon Tarn, it certainly will provide quite a splash on stage.”

Cy Coleman and Bob Fosse’s classic musical begins with the eponymous heroine, Charity – played by former West End actress Joanna Clark – being pushed into a lake by her boyfriend, Charlie. He then goes on to steal her handbag – and her life savings.

Charity is employed as a hostess at the New York dance hall in the late 1960s and her innocent vulnerability is repeatedly taken advantage of by con artists and miscreants. Her life takes a turn for the better when she meets a shy tax accountant, played by Paul Chewins.

Romance ensues only to falter when Oscar discovers Charity’s true occupation and dating history. Through trials and tribulations – as well as more dips in the lake – the show traces sweet Charity’s continued search for love. Featuring toe-tapping, show-stopping numbers such as Hey Big Spender, If My Friends Could See Me Now, and The Rhythm of Life; Sweet Charity will be on at Yeadon Town Hall from Tuesday, March 13 to Saturday, March 17. Performances start at 7.15 pm every evening. Bookings can be made on 075 706 10989.
