BESIDES showcasing local talent the Ilkley Art Trail will also provide the opportunity of seeing works by nationally and internationally known artists. Graham Sutherland is perhaps best known for the magnificent tapestry that hangs in the rebuilt Coventry cathedral. Much of Sutherland’s work was inspired by religion and coming to Ilkley as part of Churches Together in Ilkley’s contribution to the Ilkley Art Trail is one of his finest religiously inspired paintings. “The Deposition” was painted in 1947 and like many of his works from this postwar period was influence by photographs he saw of the victims of the Nazi concentration camps. The same influence may be seen in several other paintings selected from the Methodist Modern Art Collection that will be displayed at Christchurch and Ben Rhydding Methodist church during the Art Trail which runs from October 5 to 8.
