THE Oscar-nominated Turkish film, Mustang, is Ilkley Film Society's next screening on Sunday, May 7 (8pm, Ilkley Playhouse).
Lale and her four sisters are spirited teenagers living with their grandma and uncle in northern Turkey. When a religious neighbour gossips about their innocent end-of-term horseplay on a local beach their elders decide to confine them to the house, train them as traditional wives and marry them off as quickly as possible. Each girl's life then follows a different path.
Mustang is the debut film by its female director, Deniz Erguven, and was a surprise hit in independent cinemas, being seen by 50 000 people in Britain. It is a moving, sometimes heartbreaking portrayal of the pressures on young Muslim women and the recent changes in Turkish society, and of an unbreakable female spirit.
Non-members are requested to reserve tickets (£4) by phoning Dave Howell on 01943 430097. More information about Ilkley Film Society can be found at www.ilkleyfilmsociety.org.uk
