THE powerful French crime drama Dheepan is Ilkley Film Society's next screening on Sunday, April 2 (8pm, Ilkley Playhouse).

Dheepan, a Tamil Tiger soldier in the last days of the civil war in Sri Lanka, has escaped to France and obtained asylum, together with a woman and child he had never met before, by posing as a family. He finds work as a caretaker of a housing block in a Paris suburb, but the housing project is controlled by drug-dealers and Dheepan finds he has only escaped one war zone for another. He is faced with a new battle for survival for himself and his fellow refugees.

The film won the Cannes Festival's top prize, the Palme D'Or and was directed by Jacques Audiard, whose film The Beat My Heart Skipped was an earlier success for the Film Society. Extra authenticity arises from the lead actor, Anthonyvasan Jesuthasan, having been a former child soldier in the Tamil Tigers.
