STEVEN Spielberg's hugely entertaining Cold War thriller Bridge Of Spies is Ilkley Film Society's next screening on Sunday, March 12 (8pm, Ilkley Playhouse).
The film is based on the true story of the attempts to exchange the U-2 spy plane pilot, Gary Powers, shot down in Soviet airspace in May 1960, for a KGB spy held by the USA. Tom Hanks plays the Brooklyn lawyer entrusted with the negotiations, and British actor Mark Rylance's superb performance as the spy Rudolf Abel won him both Oscar and BAFTA awards.
Director Spielberg shows his usual mastery of story-telling and is helped by a fine script from Joel and Ethan Coen, the creators of The Big Lebowski and Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?, in collaboration with British playwright Matt Charman.
Non-members are requested to reserve tickets (£4) by phoning Dave Howell on 01943 430097. More information about the Film Society’s current season can be found at www.ilkleyfilmsociety.org.uk
