THE sparkling and inventive British silent film Shooting Stars is the second of Ilkley Film Society’s two annual special events on Sunday at Ilkley Playhouse (8 pm).

The ingenious and perfectly-plotted story is built around the making of a film, and the enormous Cricklewood Studios provides the film’s main set and furnishes fascinating glimpses of how films were made in the silent era.

Starring Brian Aherne, who would become an Oscar-nominated Hollywood star in the 1930s, Shooting Stars was the first film made by Anthony Asquith (son of prime minister Herbert Asquith) who would go on to make such fondly remembered films as The Winslow Boy and The Importance Of Being Earnest.

Anybody who enjoyed the 2011 silent film The Artist should not miss this 1928 predecessor, which will be introduced by silents enthusiast Dave Howell.

Non-members are requested to reserve tickets (£4) by phoning Dave Howell on 01943 430097. More information about the Film Society’s current season can be found at www.ilkleyfilmsociety.org.uk
