THE Spanish drama Julieta is Ilkley Film Society’s next screening on Sunday at Ilkley Playhouse (8pm).

This was originally planned for October 2016, but had to be postponed as the film had not been released in the UK by then.

Julieta is distraught when her teenage daughter, Antia, runs away from home without explanation.

Twelve years later she learns of a reported sighting of Antia and, renewing her search, begins to discover connections with the death of Antia’s father nine years before the disappearance.

Directed by Pedro Almodovar, the master of female-centred storytelling, the film is an adaptation of three short stories by the Canadian Nobel prizewinner Alice Munro.

Almodovar expertly juggles three different time periods in the story, using two different actors to play Julieta.

As usual with his films, the performances are superb and the audience is kept guessing until the end.

Non-members are requested to reserve tickets (£4) by contacting Dave Howell on 01943 430097.
