REHEARSALS are well under way for Ilkley Grammar School’s upcoming Beatles-inspired production Penny Lane.

Based on a story of five girlfriends who gradually grow apart and then come back together, Penny Lane spans a storyline from 1960s childhood to 1990s adulthood.

There’s ‘Dreamy Kate’; unsure about what she wants; ‘Bubbly Emily’ who follows her love of dance; ‘Feisty Susan’, strong and independent; ‘Party girl Jackie’, first to do everything and finally; ‘Free Spirit Louise’, desperate to see the world and travel.

Their stories are played out against a backdrop of some of the best Beatles’ songs and dance. The production covers childhood to adulthood and all the emotions in between.

Lara Ramrattan, head of creative arts, is excited about the production.

“We’ve never done a Beatles-inspired production and it’s fantastic to hear our take on some of the most well-known pop songs…ever,” she said. “The storyline covers just some of the emotions that all teenagers, parents and grandparents can empathise with — growing up, moving on and sometimes coming back home again!

“John Lennon’s quote: ‘Count your age by friends, not years. Count your life by smiles, not tears’, pretty much sums up our production.”

Penny Lane will be performed on February 9, 10 and 11. Tickets are £5 and £3 concessions, available from Ilkley Grammar School.
