Sounds of Ireland come to Courthouse

Otley Courthouse’s summer programme is almost at an end but there are still a couple of great events coming up.

In particular, July 20 sees the Irish Arts Foundation return to the Courthouse, presenting four great traditional Irish musicians: Karen Tweed, Tom McElvogue, Des Hurley and Chris O’Malley.

Karen Tweed has been on the folk music scene for years, playing accordion in groups such as the Poozies and Kathryn Tickell Band, as well as gaining a reputation as a sensational solo performer. On this evening, she will be performing with Tom McElvogue, Des Hurley and Chris O’Malley, all three of whom are acclaimed musicians in their own right. Those of you who saw Tim Edey and Brendan Power appear at the Courthouse last year will remember Karen, Des and Chris provided support that night, and the Courthouse is delighted to have them back. Tom McElvogue is highly regarded as a flute player, and launched his solo album, The Long Road, to critical acclaim last year. Des Hurley and Chris O’Malley are two well-known faces on the Leeds music scene, playing fiddle and piano respectively. Together, these musicians return to the roots of Irish music, and you can expect a lively night!

Before that, on Saturday, the Courthouse hosts a landmark night for Otley’s very own Newall School of Theatre Dancing, with a display of Carol Newbould’s rejuvenated favourite dances from the 50-year history of her school.

Plus, look out for the Courthouse’s summer holiday activities, which include arts and crafts, drama and songwriting workshops, as well as a taster day for children’s activities at the Courthouse.
