FLOODWATERS are (metaphorically) rising in the Ilkley Playhouse’s Wharfeside Theatre this week, as the fictional Storm Vera threatens. Yes, join us for Sandi Toksvig’s dark comedy Silver Lining, running from September 12 to 22.

Set in a storm-lashed old people’s home, Toksvig’s intriguing cast of characters await rescue as the waters rise. The audience goes straight to the eye of the storm as this dark comedy turns into a great escape, with the ladies, seemingly forgotten by the emergency services, drawing on their inner strength and humour to survive. It could sound serious and worthy, but – inevitably, from Toksvig’s razor-sharp pen – it’s also very funny, as well as touching and thoughtful in places.

There’s more rain up next, although this time the water comes counterbalanced with another element. Fire and Rain are playing in the Wildman Studio on Thursday, October 18. The show is a nostalgic journey into the music of two iconic performers, James Taylor and Carole King, weaving a musical tapestry and perhaps even making the earth move. They’ll be joined on stage by the awarding winning singer-songwriter, Gracie Falls. Join us for this mellow and moving musical event.

Ilkley’s leading, long-established Stagefright comedy night returns on Saturday , October 20. This month’s line-up includes Mock The Week’s Glenn Moore and English Comedian of the year runner-up Simon Lomas. Other acts include Gemma Roberts, Mo Haroon, and compere Anthony J Brown. Look for more updates about the line-up over the following weeks.

Our next Wharfeside production comes in November. Barnbow Canaries, written by former Chumbawamba singer Alice Nutter and set in the First World War, tells the true story of female munition workers at a Leeds Factory. It’s not a musical as such, but music of the era is woven throughout, adding to the aura of period nostalgia. It runs from November 1 to 10.

Finally, join us on Saturday, November 17 for an uplifting evening of music with The Guiseley Brothers and Otley Brass Band, who’ll be raising money for the Sue Ryder Manorlands Hospice and Friends of Clockhouse.
