RARELY does a debut film receive Oscar nominations for Best Film, Best Director and Best Screenplay but that’s what happened to Get Out, Ilkley Film Society’s next screening on Sunday, September 23 (8pm at Ilkley Playhouse).

Anyone who remembers Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner, with Sidney Poitier, Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, will recognise the film’s basic scenario – young white woman brings black boyfriend home to meet her parents – but Get Out takes the situation into very unexpected areas. Why do these impeccably liberal-seeming parents have such oddly-behaving black servants ?

Young Chris, brilliantly played by British actor Daniel Kaluuya, is to discover that far more is at risk than his relationship with his girlfriend Allison. Suspense and terror are balanced by humour thanks to a scene-stealing performance from comedian Lil Rel Howery as Chris’s buddy.

Eventually writer-director Jordan Peele had to settle for the screenplay Oscar, but his film became a surprise international hit and the word “woke”, referring to awareness of racial and social justice, and arising from the Black Lives Matter movement, gained a wider currency.

Membership for the new season is still available (details at www.ilkleyfilmsociety.org.uk ) and new members will be able to join on the night. Non-members are welcome as guests (£4) but are asked to phone Dave Howell on 01943 430097 to reserve a seat.
