THE last time I did this walk was about 20 years ago. I’ve tried several times to re-visit it, but struggled to remember where it started. So, off I went to Giggleswick and with a bit of detection work, I found it, and miraculously, remembered the way. What I had failed to appreciate back then were the views of Penyghent, Ingleborough, and Pendle Hill off into the distance, although I did appreciate the stunning scenery and the River Ribble, I just didn’t know what I was looking at. On the day I rediscovered it, there was a fair bit of snow about, but it was marvellously clear, and at one point, I could even pick out the peaks of the Lake District.

So, it really is a treat. It starts off in Giggleswick, takes a route to Feizor and Stainforth, and follows along the edge of the Ribble before coming out at Stackhouse and back to the lane where you start out - and almost entirely off road.

1 Walk up to the top of The Mains and take the path to the right of the imposing, Victorian house, Woodlands. Follow the narrow, wall lined track as it steadily climbs up to a metal gate. Through gate and immediately right, to left of wall and climb sharply up to the boundary of a disused gravel pit.

2 Follow along the edge of the gravel pit - from here you can see Penyghent and Pendle Hill, if its a clear day. The path bears off to the left and gradually becomes more distinct. Keep to the path as it continues through a series of ladder stiles, with the A65 down on your left, and views to the Lakes ahead. It eventually turns away to the right, leaving the A65.

3 Follow the path as it crosses moorland, and next to Giggleswick Scar, over on your left. The path is obvious, just keep following signs to Feizor.

4 Eventually, drop down to farm buildings, and at road, go right in to Feizor - following footpath sign to Stainforth. Opposite Elaine’s Tearooms, take the footpath marked to Stainforth. Keep to the right of the field and go over a ladder stile, follow path, over a series of ladder stiles and follow sign to Stainforth. Over another stile and downhill to wall, continue to gate. Follow track to farm, over road and take road opposite, pass Knight Stainforth camping and caravan site, on your right.

5 Just before river bridge, take the path through gate on right and follow track with the River Ribble now on your left - path is marked to Stackhouse. Keep on the path, which leaves the riverside for a while, before rejoining it, and crosses over a series of stiles and gates. The path eventually comes to a weir, go through the gate in front of weir, and then sharp right up to the road.

6 At the road - next to the Stackhouse ‘weather stone’ go left onto the quiet road and after about five minutes, take the unsigned path on right through slate gap stile into field, follow path, keeping close to left of field, and continue along a series of stiles and fields until a ladder stile.

7 Left after ladder stile, and back onto track leading back to The Mains.
