A GRIPPING two hours in the Amazonian rain forest is offered in Embrace Of The Serpent, Ilkley Film Society's next screening on Sunday, October 16 (8pm at Ilkley Playhouse).

Two scientists, one in 1909 and the other in 1940, journey up the Colombian Amazon and each has a life-changing encounter with the same man, Karamakate, the last survivor of his tribe. The film, the first from Colombia that the society has ever shown, features stunningly beautiful black-and-white photography and, although set in the past, has a great deal to say to us about our treatment of our planet and its people.

Director Ciro Guerra's film has been an unexpected international hit at the box-office and has received universal acclaim, with an astonishing 98 per cent approval rating on one of the most popular film review websites. This is certainly one of the highlights of the Film Society's current season, and a large audience is expected.

Consequently it is important that non-members reserve tickets (£4) by phoning Dave Howell on 01943 430097. Membership for the new season is still available, and it is possible to join on the night. More information is available at ilkleyfilmsociety.org.uk
