EXTRA weasels are being hunted to play the villains in an outdoor theatre production of The Wind in the Willows at Bolton Abbey.

Set against the Bolton Priory Church and medieval ruins on the banks of the River Wharfe, the production in July and August marks the first time the Bolton Abbey Estate has embarked on a bespoke outdoor theatrical event - and the 25 shows over two weeks are expected to attract hundreds of visitors.

Producers of the new adaptation of Kenneth Grahame’s enchanting tale of adventure and mischief featuring childhood favourites Ratty, Mole, Badger and Toad are seeking up to 30 local volunteers to take on the roles of weasels, the main villains in tale.

They will join a professional cast for the performances taking place July 23 to August 7.

North Yorkshire-based production company, Gobbledigook, Theatre is inviting people of any age over 12 years to audition. Show ambassadors are also wanted to welcome audiences and help them enjoy the performance.

Event manager at Bolton Abbey, Katie Collin, said: “We are looking for local people to get involved with no experience needed. All we ask is that they’d like to sing, dance, fight and footstomp through the gloriously leafy surroundings of Bolton Abbey to become part of this exciting new production.

“We are thrilled to offer the chance to join in the adventure and perform alongside a cast of professional actors in this ground-breaking adaptation. It’s such an iconic and charming children’s classic, and the setting by the river bank is perfect for the performance.”

Phil Grainger from Gobbledigook Theatre added: “We will bring the story to life with real props including a classic car and a rowing boat, as well interesting locations to make the experience extra special for our audience who will also be part of the scenery and action.”

Would-be weasels will need to be available from July 18 for a week of rehearsals at Bolton Abbey, and then be available for approximately ten performances from the July 23 up until August 7.
