BURLEY Summer Festival has unveiled a line-up of evening arts events over the festival week, from August 22 to 30.

The first night kicks off the Festival with a concert given by the Wharfedale Chamber Ensemble, under its conductor David Greed, leader of the orchestra at Opera North and leader.

The orchestra had its inaugural concert in the 2013 Festival and will be led by Clare Richards.

Its programme will include Grieg’s Holberg Suite, Suk’s Serenade for Strings and Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto in G major.

In addition, Jack Greed - Leader of the City of Leeds Youth Orchestra - and his mother, Cathy Lowe, Principal Oboe with Opera North, will give a performance of Bach’s Concerto for Oboe and Violin.

In complete contrast, on the same evening, Cabaret Saltaire will be providing a Cabaret Evening. This promises to be a rip-roaring evening of musical comedy, magic and guaranteed laughs, and not to be missed. A highlight of the event will be the appearance of blues legend, Steve Phillips.

Monday August 24 sees the return, for a second year, of the popular band, Maia, who will hold a gig in the evening, plus a song writing workshop earlier in the day. Maia is a four-piece alternative, acoustic band from Huddersfield, who play in a wide range of styles.

Their performance was a highlight of the 2014 Festival.

Thursday evening is the turn of the Burley Theatre Group with a Murder Mystery evening and also of Menston Ladies Please Choir who will be singing in aid of the Burley- Tereli Friendship Trust.

The Festival has developed the popular tradition of an opera evening for its last night event. It takes place in the Methodist Church on August 29.

This year the evening will be led by the well-known local opera and concert platform soloist, Joanne Dexter (soprano) who has worked nationally, and internationally as a soloist. She has sung a number of roles in Opera North productions.

She will be joined by John Cunningham (bass baritone), a soloist with Royal Opera (Covent Garden), and Richard Rowe (tenor) who has performed widely, including at Opera North.

An exciting instrumental performance by a star of the future, Tom Pritchard, will also be in the programme. The performers will be accompanied by Peter Selwyn who has worked widely as an opera and symphonic conductor, and is a professor at the Royal College of Music.

Their evening will offer musical favourites from Mozart, Rossini,Verdi and Bizet, together with duets and trios from other composers - and will include some lighter numbers.
