AN OTLEY school is celebrating having its passion for the arts and culture officially recognised.

Prince Henry’s Grammar School has achieved Artsmark status – with Arts Council England, which runs the scheme, praising the school’s “strong commitment to the arts.”

Headteacher Janet Sheriff said: “The arts are very important to us and it was lovely to hear about Artsmark in the week where nearly 100 of our students were involved in a stunning production of the musical Grease.

“Art, drama, music and dance are embedded in subjects across our curriculum – as an education tool, the arts can really bring subjects alive for our students.

“Our staff also give up a huge amount of their time at lunchtimes and after school to offer extra-curricular activities to students.

“This really is an award for everyone at school.”

The Artsmark Validator, who scrutinised Prince Henry’s for the accreditation, added: “There is a strong commitment to the arts which is demonstrated in the amount of arts experiences and opportunities provided across the school.

“Provision is of high quality and has the support of staff at all levels.

“The introduction of iPads across the school has contributed to an engagement in creative activities.

“It was a pleasure to experience a school that places great emphasis on the arts as a way of enhancing teaching and learning.”
