ILKLEY Players have been treating audiences to quality productions thus far in 2015 with a near sell-out run of JB Priestley’s Time and the Conways.

Coming up next is the modern classic Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf? by Edward Albee, directed by Jennie Aron in the Wildman Studio and running for five nights from Tuesday, February 24.

The 1963 winner of the Tony Award for Best Play examines the breakdown of the marriage of a middle-aged couple, Martha and George. Late one evening, after a university faculty party, they receive an unwitting younger couple, Nick and Honey, as guests and draw them into their bitter and frustrated relationship.

Ilkley Players have assembled an experienced cast of Sue Garnett and James Kingsley as warring couple Martha and George, together with Jason Evens and Nikki Mason as the unfortunate Nick and Honey who are caught in the crossfire.

The actors are clearly relishing their roles as Nikki Mason explains: “The play is a classic in its beautifully destructive view on relationships. Albee has written it with so much attention to detail and awareness of people at their worst but with a real biting wit.

“I think Honey, though by no means a pleasant character, is possibly the most sympathetic of the bunch. It’s so much fun playing someone this...drunk!”

Stagefright Comedy Club returns to Ilkley Playhouse on Saturday, April 18, with Jim Tavare head-lining.

He co-wrote and starred in Bafta award-winning The Sketch Show and is instantly recognised as being the leaky Cauldron’s landlord in Harry Potter. Tickets are already selling fast. Bar opens at 7.30pm.
