ILKLEY Film Society’s next presentation, The Great Beauty, promises to be one of the highlights of the season.

Screening at Ilkley Playhouse at 8pm on Sunday, February 15, this Italian film won an Oscar, Bafta and Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film as well as an astonishing 48 other international awards.

Set in present-day Rome and making stunning use of the locations, the film (pictured) centres on an ageing socialite, once a promising novelist, who has debased his talent and lives by writing society columns about the city’s decadent upper-class nightlife.

At his own 65th birthday party he is shocked to hear of the death of a woman he once loved and is forced to reassess his life as he walks through the ancient ruins and city streets.

The film is the fifth collaboration between director Paolo Sorrentino and his leading actor Toni Servillo, following another multiple award-winner, Il Divo, in which Servillo played the notoriously corrupt Italian prime minister, Giulio Andreotti.

Guest tickets for non-members of the society cost £4 (£2 for students) and can be reserved by calling Richard Fort on 01535 653471.
