A distinctly regionally flavoured talk about the origins of the English language will be held at Otley Courthouse this weekend.

Prince Henry's Grammar School teacher Chris Smith will give a global historical tour of the topic before settling in Yorkshire with the Vikings and Celts, and then fast forwarding through time.

Part of the town's Yorkshire Week celebrations, Tyke Talk will be presented at 11am on Saturday, August 2. Admission costs £2 for adults, £1 for children.

The emphasis will then switch to the Courthouse's younger visitors as the venue hosts a series of summer holiday art sessions and other attractions for children.

The fun begins with a Minecraft workshop at 10.30am on Wednesday, August 6, where participants will be creating landscapes inspired by the hit game using all kinds of materials - including clay and cardboard.

Aimed at eight to 14 year olds, entry costs £5, which includes materials.

Popular animated movie Brave, meanwhile, will be the inspiration for another art workshop, this time for six to 12 year olds, on Thursday, August 7.

The film tells the story of wilful young Scottish princess Merida, who has to use her archery skills and bravery to undo a terrible curse.

There will be a 2pm screening of the Disney-Pixar movie before the 3.30pm to 4.30pm workshop, which will see the children producing mini bows and arrows or plasticine models of characters from the film.

Admission for both events combined costs £5, or for the movie alone £2 for children, £4 for adults.
