SHAKESPEARE in Hollywood is the last production of the season to be staged at Ilkley Playhouse this summer, running until July 19. Directed for the Playhouse by Robin Green in the Wharfeside Theatre, this hilarious farce has sets designed in collaboration the Arts and Media students of Bradford College. The second year students are also helping the talented wardroom team at Ilkley Playhouse, with the design of some of the costumes.

It's 1934 and Shakespeare’s most famous fairies have magically materialised on Warner Brothers Hollywood set of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Smitten by the glamour of showbiz the two fairies are issued onto the set to play themselves. With a little help from blonde bombshells and movie moguls, the two are tossed into loopy love triangles with raucous results.

There is a novel mix of fact and fiction running through Shakespeare in Hollywood. Our actors recreate famous screen stars including Jimmy Cagney, Dick Powell and Joe E Brown. Mickey Rooney played Puck in Max Reinhart’s production. It is when some of Puck’s magic goes awry that the scene is set for mayhem.

Ken Ludwig’s play was originally commissioned by the Royal Shakespeare Company and won the Helen Hayes award for best play of the year 2003.
