The driver of a Wherry driving into the goods yard at Carr Bridge Station, Horsforth, by some means or other fell off on the shafts. The horse, being in the act of turning a sharp corner at the time he received a vary severe crushing between the shaft and the wherry. The man was insensible for threequarters of an hour. We understand he is doing well.

The Otley Salvationists were somewhat alarmed by a horse and light waggon, or waggonette, containing two men, being driven through their ranks at a furious rate while they were holding their services in the Market Place. The two men were stopped and taken to the police station.

There have been several narrow escapes from accidents of a serious kind at a pond near Yeadon brickworks and parents have been warned not to let their children go there to play. Plank rafts are unstable things and there is a greater depth of water there than is commonly supposed.

Former Otley weightlifter Mr E Aston an young man now living at Brough, Westmorland, is aiming high in the physical culture world. A fort-night ago he met Mr W Harwood, Haworth, to decide for the heavyweight championship of the North Of England, but was unsuccessful. Mr Aston, it will be remembered, conducted a physical culture school in Otley and was a popular competitor in local weightlifting competitions when living in the district.

The fine weather has favoured the promotion of the Otley Swimming Club and so far members have been able to freely indulge in the natatorial art. In order to stimulate interest in the club and to encourage swimmers, a 50 yards race is being arranged for tomorrow at three o'clock.

In all its history Rawdon has never witnessed so much political activity as has prevailed in its midst during the pat few days. Littlemoor has, by mutual consent, been the common battleground and here all shades of political thought and opinion have advocated their views in a manner unprecedented in the annals of the village. If the voter doesn't know how to exercise his vote tomorrow it isn't because of lack of instruction. Whatever the result of tomorrow's poll in the Pudsey Division, this past week has formed a most interesting experience in the life of the Rawdon people.

A brightly planned exhibition of the latest domestic appliances and equipment arranged by the Electrical Distri-bution of Yorkshire Ltd has been of considerable interest during the week to Horsforth housewives. Probably one of the points most likely to strike those visiting the display is the atmosphere of definite cleanliness which seems to be a natural association with electrical appliances.

A large increase in scarlet fever cases was reported at the meeting of the Wharfedale Joint Isolation Hospital this week. A total of 39 patients in the hospital at Menston were suffering at the beginning of the month and since then 45 more had been admitted. The patients were from all over the district including Burley, Guiseley, Ilkley, Otley, Rawdon, Yeadon, Menston, Pool and Esholt.

Rain interfered seriously on Saturday with Otley's annual gala in aid of medical charities. Not even glowering skies and soddened grass could altogether spoil the attraction of the main event of the day however, which was the crowning of the Rose Queen. A crowd of several hundreds gathered in the field adjoining the Manor House and forgot the discomfitures of the day in the delights of the simple pageantry of the ceremony.

They plan to roast a whole pig at Pool-in-Wharfedale as part of a scout jamboree and summer fayre later this month. After the pig, mounted on an old-fashioned spit and done to a turn (literally) over an open fire, has been cooked, slices of it will be sold to swell the funds for the Pool Scout Group.

The major part of the evening at Otley Aged People's Club on Saturday was spent playing cricket played with a bat and a balloon, and in which a run was registered each time a fielder failed to make a catch. Two teams were formed and the highest scorer was Mrs Heath, who hit five runs before being bowled by Miss Virgin.

The River Wharfe at Otley is carrying a little extra water and is well-coloured - in perfect angling condition in fact, but nevertheless very few large trout have been taken out this week. Most of the catches have been small trout, coarse fish or eels, which are now running freely.

An eleven-year-old Otley girl will be among 20 young cooks taking part in a series of cook-ins this month to see who goes forward to the Negas Radio Leeds young Supercook final. Jane Corden of The Whartons, Otley, will be one of four young cooks aged between 11 and 14, competing at the Negas showrooms in Leeds. Winners of the district finals will be presented with a food mixer and all district finalists will receive a cook's kit, including an apron, oven gloves and other prizes.

Major redevelopment at Otley Hospital seems inescapable and appropriate, according to a report presented to a meeting of the Leeds Western Health Authority. Prepared by the District Management team, the report has been produced under the heading Shaping for the future and pinpoints long term proposals for the service including the provision of more geriatric beds. It is believed that the hospital will in the future be seen as the local general hospital serving the north of the Western district with beds for elective medicine and surgery, facilities for acute admissions and the treatment of minor injuries.

A Guiseley shopkeeper claims that her trade has suffered because of the lack of car parking facilities in the area. Jean Gore, who runs the fish and chip shop at The Green, Guiseley, says the road gets jammed with cars and some would-be customers refuse to stop because there is nowhere to park. She is demanding a second car park in front of Aireborough Swimming Baths, Guiseley.
