IT'S HARD to believe it was more than 70 years ago when these fresh faced young people posed for a photograph at Ilkley Grammar School.

The spectre of the Second World War had not long receded and a brave new world beckoned as they staged their production of She Stoops to Conquer, in March, 1947. Many of these boys would have been not too far off military age when the war had come to an end less two years earlier, and the future must have seemed bright.

She Stoops to Conquer, by Oliver Goldsmith was first performed in London in 1773 and has been studied by countless generations since then.

The schoolboys in the second picture appear to have been photographed before the start of the First World War. Undated and in an unknown location the picture shows the boys wearing medals while the boy at the front holds a board with the words - Never Missed School -1908-4.
