SECOND-Lieutenant George Allan Exley, Royal Flying Corps and Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, the only son of Mr and Mrs John Exley, Burley-in-Wharfedale, has been killed at the front. Lieutenant Exley was educated at Ilkley Grammar School and was a student at the London College of Pharmacy, Clapham. On several occasions he has, with others, engaged enemy machines. At one time he was successful in smashing up one of the German machines, and both the pilot and the observer were killed. Lieutenant Exley was out with his squadron on scout work, when he got lost in a cloud, and coming down too low his machine caught in the branches of a tree and fell to the ground. He was killed instantly.

Allegations that a child had attended the canteen at Burley whilst suffering from scabies were made at the monthly meeting of the Ilkley Education Committee. At their previous meeting the committee asked for more frequent visits from the County Medical Officer in view of the prevalence of scabies. A reply to this resolution stated that in December only three cases of scabies were found at the schools. There had been prompt action by the school nurse. At the moment there are only seven cases in all. In view of the fact there are 1,450 children at school in the district the ratio is considered to be rather low.

ONE of Burley’s oldest and best known residents, Mrs Annie Lupton, of Hill Top House, died at her home on Sunday at the age of 92. Mrs Lupton, who lived at Burley with her sister Mrs Elizabeth Casson, was the widow of the late Mr John Lupton, and in her younger days lived at Bramhope, where her father, the late Mr Tenniswood, was a farm manager. The family was closely associated with Bramhope at one time and Mrs Casson was, in fact, the last person to be christened at the old Puritan Chapel at Bramhope before it fell into disuse. When the puritan chapel was reopened last September after extensive renovations, the two sisters were guests of honour at the ceremony.
