YOUNG scouts were pictured receiving their Golden Arrow Awards - the highest award available to cub scouts - in this updated photograph from the archives of the Wharfedale Observer. Pictured in the foreground are John Clarke and Timothy Moore. Other members of Menston St John's Fairfax Pack look on.

It appears to have been a beautiful summer's day when the second photograph was taken by the river in Ilkley - but the formally dressed crowds are hardly soaking up the sunshine. With the men in their smart suits and women in long-sleeved dresses - and all of their wearing hats - they must have found it hard to stay cool. The undated picture is from the archives of the Ilkley Gazette.
