HORSFORTH still had a cinema when this group of people were photographed after a film show. The picture of Horsforth Old Folk was taken outside the Imperial Cinema, on Town Street, and is believed to date back to the 1960s. The photograph is from the Wharfedale Observer archives.

Below left, these young Scouts and Cubs were members of the 14th Airedale Trinity Pack, Guiseley, back in 1968. They were pictured acting as flag bearers for the St George’s Day Parade.

l First World War bulletins by Richard Thackrah: Gunner W Frankland 11th Battery 4th West Riding Howitzer Brigade writes home: “One can’t possibly understand in Ilkley what the war is like. It is awful to see the damage that has been done.”

Ilkley Swimming Club took control of Victoria Baths for use of soldiers billeted in Ilkley and with aid subscriptions repaired baths and met other expenses.

Gunner John Fox, Motor Machine Gun Service, was one of heroes engaged in fighting for Hill 60, “a story of great British pluck among the slaughter”.

The Bantams are having French and German classes in Ilkley and also studying the basics of map reading.
