Rags and Bones was the title of a lecture delivered by Mr Frank Curzon in the Otley Mechanics' Institute. The lecturer was very successful in the descriptions he drew of the human form and its adornments, and in ridiculing some of the most objectionable modes of female attire he made frequent and effective use of the blackboard. The lecture was thoroughly enjoyed.

At a meeting of the Otley Local Board, the surveyor submitted a report of his inspection of Callhead Beck and from this it appeared that a number of privies drained into it. It was said that in the view of the high death rate it behoved the Board to put a stop to what was little better than an open sewer running through the heart of the town. The surveyor recommended that the beck be cleaned out and the objectionable connections be severed and turned into the sewers.

A letter was read to the Horsforth Local Board about the dangerous condition of the footpath known as Stoney Lane. It said the path was dangerous because of horses being allowed to travel on it and the writer had seen them going very fast. Children going to and coming from school were in danger and posts should be erected to stop horses. After being discussed a little further the matter was allowed to drop.
Post Office tells of the strain of Valentine's Day 3:22pm Thu 7 Feb 08 125 years ago
The postal authorities in Otley have issued the following notice: A severe strain is put upon the Post Office in dealing with Valentines which are sent in such large numbers. The Post Office does all it can to ensure the due despatch and delivery of correspondence at the Valentine season and it is hoped the public will assist by posting their letters early on February 13.
Worker's hand crushed in mill accident 3:36pm Thu 31 Jan 08 125 years ago
A rather serious accident occurred at Messrs Garnett's paper mill to a man named Charlie Longfield, who lives at Cross Green, Otley. It appears he was attempting to lift an iron door of a pump and let it slip. It fell on his hand. Several persons came to his aid and when the door was lifted off it was found that his hand was nearly severed off. He was taken to the Leeds Infirmary.
Yeadon School Board raises teacher's pay 2:13pm Thu 17 Jan 08 125 years ago
At a meeting of the Yeadon School Board, members proposed a motion to raise an assistant mistress's salary from £30 to £40-a-year. Mr T Slater seconded the motion saying: "I think it is only right for the board to get teachers for as little as possible for the first year but it is agreed that after the year they are to be paid according to the scale of the board."
Church packed for Bramhope funeral 9:00am Thu 10 Jan 08 125 years ago
The remains of Mr John Lawson, of Bramhope Manor, one of the members of the firm of Messrs. Samuel Lawson and Sons, Hope Foundry, Leeds, were interred in Adel Churchyard. It is a long time since the quaintly interesting old Norman church was so full of mourners, whilst the assembly gathered around the family grave numbered at least 600.

T Whitaker and Co, Springfield Mill, Guiseley was summoned to the Otley Police Court by Mr Rickards, factory inspector, for employing a boy, named Albert Myers, for more than seven days without having a certificate of fitness. Mr Whitaker admitted the fact but said he was not aware of the requirements of the Act. The mag-istrates imposed a fine of £3.

The Vicar and churchwardens at Otley distributed about £120 in dole, the sums paid to each recipient varying from 3s to 15s. There is a balance remaining of about £190 and should severe weather set in £100 of that will be expended in the purchase of coal for the necessitous and deserving inhabitants.

A shareholder has complained about the lack of trains over Christmas. The North Eastern Railway Company stops all passenger trains from Otley and Burley-in-Wharfedale to Leeds on Christmas Day. He said that this was a very serious inconvenience to Christmas travellers hereabouts, especially so this year, as there are no Sunday trains.
