Rising support is a cause for concern
SO it is official - the far right British National Party, rather than the Greens or Independents, is this area's fourth most popular political body.
Or at least that is one reasonable conclusion that could be drawn from last week's Leeds City Council local elections. To be sure, in terms of seats held the BNP is still very much at the bottom of the pile, with only one (Morley South) to its name - but the party came very close to winning a couple more.
And a look at how the votes were actually cast (with the BNP taking 11.35 per cent, nearly four times as much as the Green Party) paints a more accurate picture of the BNP's standing.
The BNP has been busy rebranding itself in recent years as defenders of the interests of the indigenous White British people', which might explain why some voters, disaffected with the available alternatives, have rallied under its flag. Its rising popularity must ring alarm bells.
In this day and age when church attendances all over the country are dwindling it was interesting to note the response to a small village event in the Washburn Valley.
Acolourful flower festival, held in the Church of St Michael and St Lawrence in Fewston, attracted more than 700 people over the Bank Holiday weekend.
It goes to show that on occasions churches can still draw the crowds.
