A strange reluctance to improve landmark
MOST parish councils put improving the appearance of their area pretty high up on their agenda, and the body for Bramhope and Carlton is no exception.
Indeed, the village employs a maintenance manager specifically to keep the area looking spick and span.
So, on the face of it, one would have presumed a proposal to enhance the appearance of The Cross, by planting the area with grass and removing some grim-looking, anti-parking obstacles would have been well supported.
But on the contrary, no other councillors at last week's parish meeting backed the proposal from the chairman, Councillor Colin Robertson, citing fears about the maintenance work that would be needed to keep the new grassed area tidy.
Residents, of course, expect and deserve to have the precept (parish tax) they pay every year spent wisely and cautiously. But this parish council is in an enviable financial position (to the extent that some expressed opposition to this year's inflationary precept rise of three per cent, due to the council's healthy reserves') - certainly one that makes the under £2,000' estimated cost of the project seem very modest.
And, with a maintenance manager already employed who could tend to the new area, it is hard to see why Coun Robertson's plan was judged so unpalatable.
