Cruelty to cats is a sad reflection on society
IT is hard to get inside the mind of anyone who would attempt to deliberately hurt or maim a family pet - and thankfully, for most of us, it is something we'll never experience.
Yet one Otley family, the Clark-Dysons, is recovering from the second malicious attack to have taken place on one of its four cats within the space of a few months.
The family's eldest cat, 20-year-old Guinness, was deliberately hit in the eyes with acrylic paint last week but luckily escaped without permanent injury, after quick action by his owner Chris Clark-Dyson.
But younger cat, Poppy, only two and a half years old and a former rescue cat, was not so lucky in February when she was kicked so hard it severed her spinal cord, and she had to have her tail amputated.
Whoever is responsible for such wantonly cruel acts should be utterly ashamed. It was the great Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi who said: "The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated." It seems we still have a long way to go.
