It is with extreme dismay that we report this week on little Charlie Carruthers, whose beloved puppy was stolen from outside a toy shop in Otley.
The four-year-old boy has only recently said goodbye to his father who has been sent on tour to Afghanistan. The puppy an adorable Siberian Husky was bought as a way of keeping little Charlie occupied while his father served for his country.
So when he found out that his pet was stolen, little Charlie was devastated. The dog had been left outside Toymaster in Otley on Sunday, November 22 as Charlie’s mum, Rebecca went to look around the store.
But within minutes the friendly pup had disappeared and has not been seen ever since.
Rebecca, who also has a two-year-old daughter Sophie, dared not reveal the dog’s name for fear that the thief or thieves will use it to train the dog into submission.
Now, as well as coping with the uncertainty surrounding her husband's duties, this brave mother of two has to comfort two innocent little children, whose world has been needlessly ripped apart.
The story, which will no doubt enrage dog lovers and parents alike, is in stark contrast to an article in last week's paper where the people of Otley were clubbing together to support British soldiers in Afghanistan.
The troops' efforts and tragic losses inspired one local to launch a support group, organising comfort parcels for soldiers.
The theft of Charlie’s pet is no doubt down to one sick individual who cares nothing for the feelings of others. To take any pet away from its rightful owner. To take this one is despicable.
Any person in their right mind, with any semblance of conscience would do the right thing and return the animal to the family who so obviously care for him.
To do so would make a world of difference to one sad little boy.
