Menston Primary gets glowing report

Menston Primary School has been given a glowing report by education inspectors.

The 326-strong school, which lies in the heart of the village, was described as ‘good with outstanding features’ in the recent Ofsted report.

Inspectors highlighted the ‘outstanding personal development and good quality care’ provided by the school and the daily Care Club, which, they say, results in pupils’ ‘evident joy in learning and in their exemplary behaviour and good attendance’.

The report, issued last week, describes the school as ‘friendly and organised’ with the needs of pupils at its heart.

It states: “The quality of teaching is good throughout the school and this has a positive impact on pupils’ learning. Good quality care ensures that pupils feel safe in school and they know that the adults around them care for them.”

It describes pupils’ personal development and well-being as outstanding and states: “Spiritual and moral development is outstanding due to the importance placed on valuing the skills of pupils and celebrating their successes.

“Pupils show considerable concern and respect for others and for cultural and social diversity. Pupils enjoy and are enthusiastic about their experiences both in school and in the Care Club. They form excellent relationships and demonstrate high levels of self confidence.”

The inspectors’ findings go on to praise the way the school works well in partnership with governors and the community which they say, makes a good contribution to community cohesion, the promotion of equal opportunities and the elimination of discrimination.

The report also highlights the parental support given to the school some of whom have described it as ‘a friendly and organised school with the needs of all of its pupils at heart.’ The report states: “Behaviour is consistently good because children are keen to learn and concentrate well during all activities. Leader-ship and management are good.

“Assessment systems are rigorous and information is generally used well to plan experiences provided and this also contributes well to the children’s good progress to meet expected learning goals and some exceed them.”

It adds: “Pupils talk enthusiastically about the topics covered in the curriculum, the links between different subjects and the number of visits they experience.

“They appreciate the good variety of extra-curricular activities and talk excitedly about the annual residential trips in year four and year six which allow them to experience a wide range of outdoor pursuits.”

Headteacher Iain Jones said: “We are very proud of Menston Primary and this report reflects how we feel about the school. We are particularly pleased that the report mentions the extensive extra-curricular programme we have developed and the many enrichment activities which staff plan to ensure that the children enjoy learning.”
