A NEW pedestrian crossing is finally in place on one of Otley's busiest streets to the relief of children, parents and staff at Westgate Primary School.
The installation of the pelican crossing on Bradford Road, agreed to by Leeds City Council after a long campaign driven by former town councillor and school governor Kevin Cooney, had to be delayed earlier this year to allow essential roadworks to go ahead.
But the facility is now in place near Bradford Road's junction with Scarborough Road to allow safer access to the school.
Westgate primary head teacher, Rhona Bignell said: "The children, staff, parents and governors are delighted that at last, they are able to cross Bradford Road in greater safety.
"The crossing will be invaluable to both children and parents making their way to the school, as well as to local residents."
A road safety team from Leeds has worked with all the children to ensure they know how to use the crossing safely.
