Menston Primary School pupils create new speed limit signs

NEW signs designed by young pupils are to be placed outside Menston Primary School to encourage drivers to slow down to 20mph.

The display is a combination of two themes with the words "20 is plenty go slow" with a picture of an elephant above the 20mph plate.

The area outside Menston Primary School is a newly designated 20mph zone and it is hoped the children's signs will encourage drivers to slow down and keep to the new speed limit.

Bradford Council's Road Safety Team held a design a sign competition and the two winners will be presented with plaques of the winning design.

The funding from the signs have come from a new development of houses nearby.

Coun Anne Hawkesworth, Bradford Council's Executive Member for the Environment and Culture, said: "There are already traffic calming measures in place around the school but these signs will hopefully alert drivers to the speed limit and encourage them to keep to the 20mph limit."

Head teacher Mr Ian Jones said: "This will help to raise parental awareness - encouraging everyone to drive safely around the school area.

"We are really thrilled with the children's enthusiasm in designing the signs which will have more meaning to the pupils because of their involvement."
