It was a day which would go down in local history while setting a world record – and Harry Ramsden’s anniversary party also brought a little bit of fame to teenagers Mavis and Wendy Raistrick.

The twin sisters were the first in line when the Guiseley restaurant sold fish and chips at the original price in 1952 to mark its 21st anniversary.

The special offer and party proved a massive draw – and the chippy pulled off the record-breaking feat of selling 10,000 portions of fish and chips in a single day.

Mavis, now Broadbent, appeared along with her sister in the local press and subsequently in a book about the famous restaurant.

She said: “It was a lovely day. There were thousands there, and all the old cars lining the road. There was loads of entertainment – with bands and fireworks.”

Now approaching 80, Mavis, who lives in Otley, was just 19 when she got the day off work to go to the massive party.

“We lived in Horsforth, so we walked from there in the morning – we had such a lovely time, and it was midnight when we went home,” she said.

Their effort to get there early meant the sisters were first in line.

“We just sat outside and waited, and with us being first in the queue they gave us fish and chips for free. Everybody else paid three ha’pennies,” she said.

“We had our photo taken with Harry Ramsden – he was a really lovely man.”

“There were thousands there,” she added. “You couldn’t see the road at all.

“I have never seen anything like it – it will never be forgotten.”

The sisters were given commemorative cigarette lighters to mark the occasion.

“We didn’t smoke then, so we gave them away,” she said.
