Local band Feldspar nominated for award
Local band Feldspar were nominated for a national Indy Music Award and have got through to the final four acts in their category.
The band, made up of Ilkley's Ben Lloyd-Evans and Menston's Will Green write and play original songs, and gig regularly in Leeds, Manchester, and London.
The lads have now been invited to the Awards Ceremony on April 25 at the Forum in Kentish Town, London.
Their music will be judged there by a panel of record label personnel.
Ben said: "We have lots of local supporters and it would be fantastic to let them know of our attempts to get our music to as wide an audience as possible."
Will Green plays guitar and sings lead vocals while Ben plays piano and provides vocal harmony.
Feldspar have been playing together since 2004 when Will, who had been writing songs for a while, realised that his friend Ben was an exceptionally good pianist and it might be a good idea to play together. Influenced by Dylan, Simon and Garfunkel and Leonard Cohen as well as 60s English folk revivalists such as Bert Jansch, Martin Carthy, and Nick Drake, Feldspar quickly made a name for themselves on the local acoustic and folk scenes.
They were particularly well received by the Otley Folk Club and its annual Festival.
In 2005 Will moved to Oxford to do an English degree and Ben to Manchester to study piano at the Royal Northern College so gigging was more sporadic than the band would have liked.
Despite this, they managed to play several great venues in London, packing out The 12 Bar Blue Club several times, as well as putting in memorable performances at Green Note, The Edinburgh Cellars, Babalou, Mass and the Proud Galleries.
Further afield, they've been fortunate to support some fantastic folk acts including Jon Strong, the multi-folk-award winning Lau and the quite brilliant Vin Garbutt.
This year will be an exciting time for the band as they plan to expand to include Ben Cashell on cello,
Rob Cope on soprano sax and Jon Ormston on percussion.
Ben said: "Once Will finishes his degree he will be moving with the rest of the band to Manchester where we will rehearse, write and hopefully dominate the music scene until millions of people up and down the country are asking, Why are they called Feldspar?' The answer, of course, is that Will thought of the word in a pub toilet!"
