Ilkley Upstagers ‘High School Musical’ at the King’s Hall
My seconds youth show of the week and as with SCALA what talent there was on show.
I knew absolutely nothing about High School Musical' but my word the King's Hall was full of teenagers who did. They sang every song together with the cast on stage.
This was definitely a cult show for today's teenagers, they loved it.
I would say there must have been almost 40 teenagers on stage loving every minute and bounding in energy and enthusiasm.
The plot is thin, football, drama and love causing tension within their American school. It is the music that attracts the teenagers, loud modern and upbeat with one or two lighter melodies thrown in.
Their enjoyment is obvious and throughout the show the energy was never ending.
The company excelled and principals were outstanding. Only 16 Laura Benazaize as Grabriella has a great future. She has a pleasing stage presence and a beautiful voice. A dancer of note too.
Jamie Prudhoe (Troy) also has a fine voice and had the girls in the audience swooning in the duet Me And You'.
Meggie Smith's as the flashy, bitchy Sharpay was a very accomplished performer. She looked great and pottered about the stage with confidence. Danny Mann as her brother Ryan played a very good part too.
There was a striking and comical performance from Lois Taylor as Kelsi.
The two teachers in the plot Miss Darbus and coach Bolton were convincingly played by Jill Whitehouse and Mick Duckworth.
The back up principals were all impressive and were played by Olly Musgave, Amelia Dhallai, Olivia Woollin, Matt Barton, Ashley Woodhouse and Lucy Hutton.
Costumes were fabulous. Co-direction was by Gill Jackson and Paul Nowland, Paul once again in charge of the movement and dynamic choreography.
MD was Phil Walsh. Music was taped with a bit of help from the pit and at times there were pauses while cast had to wait for music to start.
The finale numbers We're All In This Together' and High School Mega Mix' brought spontaneous applause and singing from the audience. Another great night of entertainment.
