A century separated the premieres at Leeds Town Hall of the two choral works in last Saturday's concert: the young Ralph Vaughan Williams introduced Towards the Unknown Region' to the Leeds Musical Festival audience on October 10,1907. This 13 minute long work for large orchestral and choral forces - beefed up by the mighty Town Hall organ - could be said to epitomise the great West Riding Choral tradition, then at its zenith. |
