Horsforth Golf Club host LDU stableford

HORSFORTH: At the annual general meeting held in the clubhouse, attended by over 100 members, Barrie Gill was elected as Captain and John Iceton President for the coming year.

Thirtysix four man teams took part in a Leeds and District event on Thursday in wet and windy weather as Horsforth Golf Club played host to the LDUGC Associate Members four-man team stableford.

The joint top score of 78 saw the team from Garforth GC (M Snowden, T Gilbert, M Pedley and B Fothergill) take the top slot after a countback from the Wakefield GC team (D Mansell, D Walton, S Bladen and P Burton). In third place was the team from Pontefract and District GC (M Roberts, G Fry, S Timmins and R Godson). The Horsforth team, led by the club captain, finished in 26th position.

Jack Ryan, last year's Junior Captain, was selected to play in a Leeds and District Junior Team in a friendly match against Yorkshire Girls on Wednesday at Selby Golf Club.

COOKRIDGE HALL GC SENIORS: Gale force winds greeted those seniors who turned up for last Thursday's individual stableford competition. It ruined many a card but not Allan Murray's.He managed an admirable 37 points to head the field, leaving others trailing in his wake.

Nearest challenger was relative new comer John Henshaw, four points behind. An almighty scrap for third place involved four golfers who managed 32 but, with a better score over the closing holes, it was David Wilkinson who eclipsed Trevor Vickers, Tony Vickers (no relation) and Trevor Gurney. The general feeling though was of the weather being the ultimate victor.

OTLEY: The snow that fell over the Easter weekend caused the cancellation of the men's competition and the postponement of the Easter Mixed.

Despite the latter having to be put back for a week, over 50 of the would-be competitors still partook of the planned meal that would have followed the golf.

The ladies enjoyed a Pinehurst/Chapman Greensomes competition in a change to the usual diary. The format proved to be ideal for the Ladies' Treasurer Janet Wood who teamed up with Morag Wilkinson to win by a handsome margin.

Results were: 1, J Wood and M Wilkinson 78 (26.5) 51.5; 2, R Harrison and S Beanlands 80 (22.5) 57.5; 3, S Sunderland and J Quinn 79 (20) 59 on the back nine.

CHARITY EVENT AT HOLLINS HALL: The Bradford branch of the Alzheimer's Society is trying to organise a charity golf day at the Marriott Hollins Hall on Wednesday, May 15.

Unfortunately they are struggling to recruit teams of players and will lose money if they cancel so they are trying very hard to encourage people to support them. Emmerdale actor Duncan Preston is the Society Patron and was the impetus behind the idea.
