  • Wrangle over paupers walking in the workhouse garden

    125 years ago At a meeting of the Wharfedale Board of Guardians, Mr Ibberson brought up the question of why the paupers at the Otley workhouse were not allowed to walk in the garden. He argued that it would be a great relief for them to be allowed out. After all, pauperism was not a crime. Mr Lund said people preferred to sit around the fire than go out and it was their own fault. Mr Lund added that the men had been allowed into the garden once or twice and they had chaffed other men working, thereby causing a feeling of rebellion in their minds. read more
