  • Elaborate hoax has the onlookers fooled

    125 years ago On Monday evening last a clever but discreditable hoax was carried out by some parties at present unknown, and it is very generally supposed that its object was to draw away the attention of the police, while some poachers got across the bridge. Two young men were nearing the gas lamp adjacent to the sewage out-fall when they saw what they took to be a man fall from the parapet into the water. The figure appeared to struggle bravely, and in great alarm at the fact of this supposed suicide, the police were summoned in force. After much trouble they fished out a dummy. Meanwhile the bridge and its approaches were crowded with people and intense excitement quickly changed to uncontrollable laughter. read more
