  • Change in law enabled men to marry dead wife's sister

    125 years ago A discussion took place at the Liberal Club, Otley, on Monday evening, the subject being the Deceased Wife's Sister Bill. The arguments were based principally upon the text in Leviticus, which the opponents of marriage with a deceased wife's sister considered to be a scriptural prohibition. Mr W A Hill moved that the meeting sympathised with the objects of the Deceased Wife's Sister Bill Association, and trusts that efforts being made will remedy the unsatisfactory state of things brought about by the law of 1835 prohibiting marriage with a deceased wife's sister. read more
