  • Fisherman takes the plunge after getting in a tangle

    100years ago Mr Mundell, a well known angler of Manningham, had a somewhat unusual experience the other day on the Wharfe at Castley, near Pool. He was engaged in his favourite pastime when some of his bottom tackling fouled an overhanging tree. Two bystanders - Joseph Robinson (Otley) and Abraham Clapham (Pool) offered to regain the tackling and climbed along the tree, which was almost touching the surface of the stream. Clapham, an elderly man, had the misfortune to overbalance himself and he was soon floundering in mid-stream. As the water here is very deep and as Clapham could not swim he was in great danger of being drowned. Robinson and Mundell went further along the tree and ultimately got hold of Clapham's hand. He was subsequently taken to the White Hart Hotel at Pool where restoratives were applied, and he recovered. read more
