This year, the East Riding County Choir has been working on the oratorio Elijah by Felix Mendelssohn, which tells the events of the Prophet Elijah's life as described in the Old Testament. It was first performed on August 26th, 1846, and consists of 42 movements. This piece is in the Baroque style but also incorporates some early Romantic elements, such as the lyricism. The choir will be performing alongside an orchestra and four soloists on May 11th, 2024, in the gorgeous Beverly Minster.
The East Riding County Choir is a choral society that was formed in 1957. It currently has approximately one hundred members, most of whom are from the East Riding area. The choir is a four-part SATB (Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass) ensemble, with Paul Dewhurst serving as the musical director. It is an independent, self-funding choir and has been since 1978. They have been rehearsing every Monday night since January at St. Nicholas Church in Beverly and will conclude their preparations the week before the concert. Their most recent concert was Handel's Messiah in December 2023, which they perform at Christmas once every two years. However, over the years, they have sung most of the major choral works.
Tickets for the concert cost £20 for adults, with an additional booking fee of 50p while children aged sixteen and under can attend for free.
